Maryland Casinos Generate More Than $15 Million in Revenue During February

The Maryland Lottery today announced revenue numbers for the state’s two casinos — Hollywood Casino Perryville in Cecil County and the Casino at Ocean Downs in Worcester County. February’s statewide revenue totaled $15,075,083.90.

Hollywood Casino Perryville generated $11,548,234.42 in February, and its gross gaming revenue per machine per day was $265.48 for the month. Casino at Ocean Downs generated $3,526,849.48 in February, and its gross gaming revenue per machine per day was $152.02. A detailed breakdown of February’s fund disbursement, fiscal year-to-date totals for the individual casinos and the combined state total are as follows:

The Maryland State Lottery Commission is responsible for all matters relating to regulation of the state’s slots program. In this regulatory role, the Maryland Lottery oversees all internal controls, auditing, security, surveillance, background investigation, licensing and accounting procedures for the facilities.

    I see nothing but favorable statements by the Lottery Commission regarding revenues.  Yet, the actual revenues, after a full 17 months of operation at Hollywood, and 14 months of operation at Ocean Downs are far below original projections.  For CY2012 Hollywood appears to be 38% below projections, while Ocean Downs is 70% below projections.

The numbers which you cite are based on 2007 projections by the Department of Legislative Services. Those estimates have since been updated to reflect today’s economic conditions. Please note that a variety of unforeseen events and circumstances — such as fluctuations in the market, weather conditions, increased competition from surrounding states, delays in construction and more — can affect revenue projections.

    The Maryland Lottery will continue to report on the state’s casino operations, providing detailed information on revenue generated. You may be interested to learn that both Hollywood Casino Perryville and the Casino at Ocean Downs are showing year-over-year increases. In fact, total revenue generated through 2011 reached more than $183 million, with $89 million benefiting the Education Trust Fund.
