MDLottery and Casinos Contribute More Than $829.5 Million to the State in FY 2013

Total revenue contributions surpass previous year by 27.6%

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) today announced FY2013 sales and revenue. Together, traditional lottery and casinos sent $829.54 million to the state, an increase of 27.6% from the previous fiscal year. Maryland’s General Fund and Education Trust Fund benefit from these contributions.

Traditional lottery sales dipped slightly from FY2012, with the agency generating $1.756 billion in sales, down 2.2% from $1.795 billion, and contributing $545.2 in revenue to the state’s General Fund, down 1.9% from $556 million. “With the growth of Maryland’s casino industry, the decrease in traditional lottery sales this past fiscal year was not unexpected,” MLGCA Director Stephen Martino said. “However, the good news is clear: When combining traditional lottery and casino gaming revenue, there is a significant increase from the previous fiscal year in the amount of money generated for the state.” Year-end highlights include:

  • Traditional lottery sales: $1.756 billion;
  • Traditional lottery revenue: $545.2 million;
  • Commissions earned by retailers: $119.8 million (sales commissions rose to 5.5% on Jan. 1, 2013);
  • Prizes paid to players: more than $1.036 billion;
  • Operational expenses: remained consistent at just 3.1% of total sales.

Mega Millions and Powerball, the Maryland Lottery’s multi-state jackpot games, registered a combined $202.4 million in sales. Combined sales for all Lottery jackpot games — Mega Millions, Powerball, Bonus Match 5 and Multi-Match — totaled $252.2 million. The Maryland Lottery’s monitor games, which include Keno and Racetrax, had combined sales of $493.6 million.

In other game sales figures, Pick 3 totaled $245.5 million, Pick 4 sales came in at $267.8, and the Lottery’s newest game, 5 Card Cash, brought in $11.2 million. The Lottery’s instant games, or scratch-offs, garnered $485.8 million in sales.

Casino gaming at the state’s four operating casinos generated $608,348,515 in revenue, with $284,340,606 sent to the state’s Education Trust Fund. In November 2012, voters passed a gaming referendum that resulted in the expansion of table games into Maryland casinos, 24-hour facility operations and approval for a new casino site in Prince George’s County. Year-end highlights include:

  • Contributions of $284.34 million to the Education Trust Fund (ETF), an increase of $189.8 million from FY2012. This fund was established to support early childhood education, public elementary and secondary education, public school construction and capital improvement projects in the state.
  • In addition to the ETF contribution, FY2013 slot machine revenue benefited the following: Maryland Horse Racing Purse Dedication Account ($39.1 million), local impact grants ($30.7 million), Racetrack Facility Renewal Account ($10.8 million), MLGCA operating costs ($11.2 million) and Small, Minority & Women-Owned Businesses Account ($8.4 million).
  • Employment at Maryland’s four casinos has grown to approximately 3,500, with full-time employees benefiting from comprehensive healthcare and retirement investment options.

“These impressive revenue numbers wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of MLGCA staff and employees in the gaming industry throughout Maryland,” Martino said.

Since its inception in 1973, the Maryland Lottery has contributed more than $13.3 billion in revenue to the state of Maryland.
