Video Lottery Facility Location Commission to Conduct Site Visit and Public Hearing on Slots Proposal July 15 at Ocean Downs

Maryland’s Video Lottery Facility Location Commission will conduct a site visit and public hearing for the Worcester County facility operation license proposal on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ocean Downs Racetrack in Berlin, Maryland, the Commission announced today.

This will be the Commission’s first of a series of visits and hearings to be conducted at sites proposed by the four applicants for video lottery terminal operation licenses in Maryland. Visits to proposed sites in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, and Cecil County will be conducted in August and September.

“The purpose of each of the site visits and public hearings will be to get a sense from the applicants of the size and scope of the proposed facilities and to receive public input from residents of the communities surrounding the proposed facility about potential positive and negative impacts of the facility,” said Commission Chairman Donald C. Fry. “In Worcester County, the commissioners will be particularly interested in seeing how the proposed facility would be integrated as part of the existing Ocean Downs racetrack infrastructure.”

The Commission plans to tour the Ocean Downs facility beginning at approximately 3 p.m., to be followed by a presentation from the applicant at approximately 4 p.m. The public hearing will begin immediately after the applicant’s presentation and is expected to conclude by 7 p.m. Individuals interested in speaking to the Commission are encouraged to sign up to testify before the hearing by calling Maureen Merzlak of the Department of Legislative Services at 410-946- 5530 or 301-970-5530. Witness sign-up sheets will also be available at the hearing location by 3 p.m. the day of the hearing. At the discretion of the Chairman, individual testimony may be limited to five minutes or less. Speakers should submit 20 copies of any written testimony to the Commission’s staff no later than 3:30 p.m. the day of the hearing.

Individuals who would like to testify, but are unable to attend the public hearing, may submit written testimony to Chairman Donald C. Fry, Video Lottery Facility Location Commission, Room 214, Legislative Services Building, 90 State Circle, Annapolis, Maryland, 21401.
